It’s cottage season in Ottawa, which means lots of us are packing our bags and leaving the city for nearby lakes and forests. It’s a beautiful time to live in Ottawa, and the cottage country that surrounds us has got to be among the best in the world.
For foodies, cottage season brings with it a whole new world of meal options. Grills, open fires, fishing, picnics—all these experiences mean a different way of preparing and enjoying food that we don’t get in the city.
For the scone addicts out there, it also means some whole new ways of enjoying your favourite pastry. Today, we look at three great ways to enjoy scones at home, all summer long.
First things first—how do you keep your scones fresh all weekend?
Because our scones are all handmade with real ingredients, they only stay fresh for a couple days. And while three day old scones are still good (especially if you warm them up in the oven for a few minutes), they’re just not the same.
So how do you ensure that the scones you eat Sunday morning are just as fresh and delicious as they were on Friday?
Easy—bake them yourself.
At the SconeWitch, all of our scones are available unbaked and ready for you to take home. Buy them in packs of 6 or 12 on Friday, and cook them right from frozen Sunday morning. They only take 20 minutes and will make your house smell incredible (you can even tell your friends you made them yourself—we won’t tell!).
Bring your favourite condiments home.
If you’ve ever eaten a scone in one of our shops, you’ve probably had some of our awesome jams. These are all made by Moss Berry Farm, and guess what—they’re all available for sale!
All the jams we serve in our restaurants are available to purchase. Pair with Devon cream, and you’ll recreate the whole scone experience no matter where you are.
Make some fancy, refreshing desserts.
Want to get super creative? Our scones are an awesome base for a whole bunch of different desserts (try them ice cream, seriously). One of our favourite things to do with them is to make a nice and refreshing strawberry shortcake.
To start, buy as many of our vanilla cream scones as you want. Remember that if you’re buying more than 6 baked, it’s best to call ahead and have us set some aside (it’s our most popular flavour and sells out fast, so this will stop you from being disappointed).
Next, cut up as many strawberries as you’d like and stick them in a bowl. Sprinkle them with sugar to taste and let them sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes, so they get all juicy.
Split your scones horizontally and place a dollop of whipped cream on the bottom half. Add a spoonful of strawberries, another bit of whipped cream, and the scone top on top.
And that’s it! You’ve made delicious strawberry shortcake.
